Bible and the Liturgy (POD)
The Bible and the Liturgy illuminates the vital and meaningful bond between Bible and liturgy, connecting Church past and present.
In the modern day, Christians accept Church rituals as sacred but baffling heirlooms from the Church's past. But these rituals are so much more than that. Father Daniélou delves into how the Church's liturgical rites and feasts are intended not only to transmit the grace of the sacraments but also to instruct the faithful in their meaning, as well as the meaning of the whole Christian life. It is through the sacraments in their role as signs that Christians learn. Daniélou helps readers rediscover the significance of these rites so that the sacraments may once again be thought of as the continuation of the great works of God in the Old Testament and the New.

Chief Divine Service of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church
Friedrich Lochner wrote one of the best studies on the Chief Divine Service for the Lutheran Church. His work in liturgy and hymnology as a founding father of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, was foundational to worship life in the LCMS. A full manuscript of his work in English, including the part on music in the liturgy, has never been released in one book before now. This foundational work should be read by all: from theology students and pastors to musicians and lay people.
This authoritative translation includes all of Lochner's original material, including practices that may no longer be observed in modern culture. Original page numbers have been kept to allow for easy reading alongside the original German text. Translations of liturgical texts have been adapted to the wording of Lutheran Service Book, with some notations to allow the reader to see differences between the source material and translation.

Complete Guide to Christian Symbols
Without the meaning behind sacred symbolism, its beauty quickly fades. A Complete Guide to Christian Symbols provides a wealth of Christian symbolism in one place, in one artistic style, in one format. It briefly explains each symbol, offering a bit of historical use and practical advice on their use.
Sacred art follows a parallel path with sacred music. Both point us to the Word of God by emphasizing Scripture or illustrating it or repeating it. Christian symbolism takes things another step by condensing narratives and ideas into concise visuals. By pondering them, it is possible to accent the richness of Scripture from a simple design.
Readers will appreciate this guidebook of symbolism when confronted with unfamiliar sanctuaries, denominations, or sacred art.

Heaven on Earth: The Gifts of Christ in the Divine Service
The liturgy is not a style of worship. The liturgy is the substance of justification as it is brought through means.
This book is an introduction to the liturgy and its importance. It takes the liturgy and makes it easy for the layperson to understand that the New Testament church service brings God's presence, in Jesus the Christ to the people of God who have been cleansed from their sins. This is a holy meeting made possible by the blood of Christ that cleanses the believer. This understanding of the church service helps one to understand that the church service is more than a meeting place; it is the manifestation of the New Testament church on earth as Christ calls His bride around Word and Sacraments.
Heaven on Earth will deepen your understanding of the Divine Service and why it remains the Church's chief worship service.

History of the Dissolution of the Ancient Liturgical Forms in the Lutheran Church of Germany
Geschichte der Auflösung der alten gottesdienstlichen Formen in der evangelischen Kirche Deutschlands (informally, "Graff") is a German academic work from the 1920-30s (two vols. with a second edition) that surveys and explains German liturgical life from the Reformation to the end of the Enlightenment (approximately 1517-1800).
A librarian at the Lutheran Loccum Abbey, Paul Graff used the old Lutheran church orders and agendas as the basis of his detailed account. He discusses the various periods generally with respect to prevailing attitudes and circumstances, then provides detailed examples of specific liturgical services and rites from a wide swath of German-speaking territories. Each volume also includes an appendix on musical movements in and associated with German evangelical liturgical life. Finally, copious footnotes and indexes on names and topics, Scripture verses, hymns, and works cited provide exhaustive means for further research. These volumes represent perhaps the most ready compilation of references to Lutheran worship documents and scholarship prior to World War II, as well as discussions of Lutheran architecture, church furnishings, and liturgical attire.
Music and history scholars, along with pastors and church professionals, will appreciate having this source document available in English.

In Defense of Christian Ritual: The Case for a Biblical Pattern of Worship
Is Christian worship best conceived as a creative, Spirit-fueled experience that any formalized structure necessarily inhibits, or are there any biblical prescriptions around for worship that Christians were meant to follow?
In light of recent research from various disciplines-including history, psychology, and New Testament studies - In Defense of Christian Ritual: The Case for a Biblical Pattern of Worship argues the latter.
Specifically, this book will demonstrate three things.
Readers will discover that the apostolic teaching embodied in the church's early ritual, as expressed in its liturgy, was never intended to be outdated or rendered irrelevant in light of current fads. It was never meant to be a relic of the ancient past, but a structured way of bringing the "memoirs of the apostles" -that Jesus died for sinners- to God's people in the here and now.

New Song We Now Begin: Celebrating the Half Millennium of Lutheran Hymnals 1524-2024
We tend to remember hymns one at a time. They color our lives, transmit our theology, and form our faith. We forget that the reason we can do so is because they have been made available throughout the centuries in hymnals. This edited collection explores the 500-year tradition of Lutheran hymnal production, illustrating how these books have influenced Lutheran faith and worship practice over time.
Editor Robin A. Leaver has assembled a notable team of contributors from across the wider Lutheran church. Each chapter draws readers into the history and contributions of one or more landmark hymnals, ranging from the first books published during Luther's lifetime to volumes that have shaped the dimensions of the contemporary Lutheran church in the United States. Chapter authors include Leaver, Paul Grime, Markus Rathey, Joseph Hurl, Dianne M. McMullen, Jon D. Vieker, Paul Westermeyer, Mark A. Granquist, Daniel Zager, and Gracia Grindal.

On Any Given Sunday: The Story of Christ in the Divine Service
On any given Sunday the Christian approaches Christ who is present in Word and Meal. The songs, movements, and prayers that surround this Word and Meal are called the Divine Service. It is God's (divine) service to us and our proclamation of Christ's life, death, and resurrection to ourselves and anybody that enters the church on that Sunday.
One way to appreciate the traditional divine service is to see the life of Christ on display. The major events in the life of Christ are hinted at or explicitly mentioned in the classic order of service. We rightly plead for God's mercy when we enter his presence. God's answer is Christ. Traditionally Christians have sung the Christmas song "Gloria to God in the highest" after pleading, " Lord, have mercy!" With this reminder of Christ's birth we begin the story of Christ. Soon we wave our palm branches and sing " Hosanna!" on Palm Sunday. We cry the Good Friday prayer, " Lamb of God" . We eat with our resurrected Lord as did the Emmaus disciples, and we receive a blessing as we enter the same crazy world the disciples did after Jesus blessed them as he ascended into heaven.
This volume aims to teach the Divine Service to both the lifelong worshipper who was never taught why the church does the things the church does on Sunday mornings and the curious observer of this ancient tradition. It is divided into two parts. Part One: A Story of the Divine Service is a story of a young married couple encountering Christ's forgiveness at a church service and finding the ability to forgive each other. Part Two: The Life of Christ in Poetry and Prose explains the life of Christ as told in the classic Divine Service.
It is the hope that this book helps teach this beautiful but under-appreciated jewel of our Christian heritage.

On Liturgical Theology
Nearly everything that theologians write on liturgy, Father Kavanagh notes, is often called liturgical theology, although on closer examination such works appear to be either dogmatic theologies about the liturgy or systematic theologies making use of liturgical data. None truly reflects how liturgy shapes theology or is theology or even relates to theology.
This work is Father Kavanagh's effort to substantiate the existence of a truly liturgical theology. It will raise almost as many questions as it answers, but it will also further insight into theology and liturgy as it assays their relationship.

Shape Of Baptism
After revealing the genesis of the Roman tradition of initiation, Kavanagh moves on to the tensions between traditional practice and the need for change. He stresses the Church's ongoing need to focus its efforts on its main concern - the initiation of new members.
